Circulation
Faculty, staff, and students of the University of Tennessee can borrow Map Services materials. Students of local community colleges, employees of some local agencies and businesses, and the general public may also borrow materials if their school or business has arranged for these privileges, or if they, as private citizens, have subscribed to the University Libraries services. Subscriber cards are available through the main Circulation Department in Hodges Library.
Reference
All Map Services reference services and tools are available to the general public as well as to UT staff and students. These services and tools include aerial photography and remote sensing records, place name searches, cartobibliographies, alternate resource listings, and many other useful items. The Map Services staff makes every effort to be at least the next-to-last place you have to look for the materials you need. If we do not have what you are looking for, it is our goal to help you locate another source.
Reserve
A reserve section is provided for faculty who choose to assign maps in courses taught here at UT or other local colleges. The Map Services Staff also keep records from year to year of the materials used in these classes to assist faculty in reassembling their future reserve collections. These lists can be kept confidential if a faculty member so desires.
Interlibrary Loan & Referral
Many maps are available through Interlibrary Services. The Map Services Staff can assist patrons in identifying desirable map publications and materials, and can then refer patrons to other libraries which will be willing to loan said materials. There are thousands of map libraries around the world in academic, public, government, and corporate settings. Most of these resources are linked together through networks and associations, many of which the UTK Map Servies is a part.
Photocopiers
Map Services has both a standard office copier and a Xerox 2515 oversize copier. The 2515 can copy items as wide as 38 inches and as long as 55 feet (although we probably wouldn't let you copy anything 55 feet long on our 2515). The regular charge is $2.00 for a standard 2ft by 3ft sheet of copier paper, or $1.00 per linear foot for specially cut paper. Copies on the office copier are $.10 a copy and UTK Library Copycards are also accepted.
Use of both copiers is largely self service, and patrons accept all copyright responsibilities for the materials they copy. As an academic library, Map Services is protected under Title 17 of the US Code against copyright damages for copied materials. We do, however, actively discourage any and all copyright infringement resulting from the use of our equipment.
Large-format Printer
Map Services has a Hewlett Packard DesignJet 800PS printer. This is a color printer that can print as wide as 42 inches. The library maintains rolls of plain and coated paper in 24, 36, and 42-inch widths. Using this printer can be a time-consuming process, especially if there are large files to be downloaded. Please allow yourself plenty of time to receive your output. Charges for this printer are $1.50 per square foot for plain paper and $2.00 per square foot for coated paper.
Cartographic Information File (CIF)
The CIF includes information about companies and agencies that produce
cartographic materials. The agencies and companies included fall into any
one of six main categories: U.S. Federal (USF), U.S. Commercial (USC),
U.S. State (USS), Foreign Federal (FF), Foreign Commercial (FC), or
International (I). Catalogs, addresses, and correspondence are the main
types of information kept in this file. The Map Services staff are continually
expanding the CIF to include more worldwide sources of information.
An online version of the CIF is now available
via similar categories as those mentioned above.
Tours, Lectures, & Orientations
Tours, orientations, and lecture space are offered by the Map Services Staff. The Map Services Staff can accommodate the needs of college and professional level tours, as well as grade school or community level tours. Please call to arrange a visit or to reserve the Map Services instructional area for your own class or lecture.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Geographic Information Systems utilize ArcView, ArcInfo, and other CD-ROM technology accessible in Map Services. ArcView can provide patrons with spatial geographic data derived from several digital products.
Earth Science Information Center (ESIC):
Map Services serves as an Earth Science Information Center for the state of Tennessee. As a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) ESIC Office, Map Services can provide information on the publication and availability of government produced maps as well as many other helpful and informative publications dealing with the earth sciences.
