Position: Instructional Services Librarian for Undergraduate Programs
Reports to: Head, Integrated User Services
Appointment Rank: Assistant or Associate Professor
Salary: $44,000.00 minimum
Available: July 1, 2008

The University of Tennessee (UT) Libraries invites applications for the position of Instructional Services Librarian for Undergraduate Programs.  The successful candidate will join a team of four librarians in the newly organized Integrated User Services (IUS) Department.

We are seeking an instruction librarian who has a passion for teaching and guiding undergraduate students, who is excited about contributing to the evolution of our learning commons, and who possesses an affinity for the application of emerging technologies to instructional services.

This newly-created department consists of:

  • Library Commons Services as part of The Commons – a collaboration of the Libraries and the Office of Information Technology
  • The Studio–a multimedia production lab and consultation service
  • Research Assist–a walk-in research consultation service
  • Media collections and services
  • Circulation services
  • Instructional services

This department provides innovative undergraduate student programming, classroom support, and leadership of emerging technologies for Commons and Research Services librarians and instructional support for general education and student success.

Position Description:
The Instructional Services Librarian for Undergraduate Programs provides vision and leadership in the planning and implementation of library instruction programs that are integrated into the basic skills general education curriculum and other lower division courses of study.  The librarian works closely with faculty and undergraduate course instructors to explore new ways to achieve desirable learning outcomes. 

Collaborates with other IUS librarians (instructional technology librarians) and Research and Collection Services librarians (subject librarians) in the application of new technologies to the instructional design process.  Serves as liaison to the Student Success Center and First Year Studies program and acts as contact person for community and school groups.  Joins all Commons staff to provide the highest quality information and user education programs. May supervise one staff member and a graduate assistant.

Required Qualifications:
ALA accredited master’s degree.  Applicant should demonstrate an understanding and commitment to the philosophy behind the continuing evolution of a learning commons.  Possess knowledge of current trends in information literacy and evaluation as well as an understanding of learning theory and its integration into successful instructional technologies.

Provide evidence of experience using web authoring tools and an awareness of the application of Web 2.0 to library services and the learning process.  Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.  Must demonstrate an ability to articulate the place of the library in the higher education curriculum and to interact with faculty in a diplomatic and positive manner. Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment accompanied by initiative, self-direction, and commitment to innovation, creativity, and excellence.  Commitment to research and creative achievement.

Preferred Qualifications:
Instruction experience; supervisory experience.

Salary and Benefits:
Appointment at rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, dependant on experience. Minimum salary is $44,000. Faculty rank and status; twelve-month, tenure-track appointment. Library faculty must meet University requirements for promotion and tenure. Excellent benefits include 24 annual leave days; choice of state retirement plan or TIAA/CREF with nonrefundable contributions paid for the employee by the University; optional group health and life insurance plans.

Tuition remission is available for all university employees; partial undergraduate tuition remission is available to dependent children and spouses of UT employees. Review of applications will begin April 18, 2008 and will continue until the position is filled.
