FindText FAQ

What is FindText?

FindText is software that provides direct links from citations in selected databases to the electronic full text of the item (if available) or to other avenues to full text.

How do I use it?

As you are searching in the UT Libraries databases (see list below), look for the FindText button - SFX button

NOTE: In several databases such as the Web of Science, the UT customized button is not available; look for a button like this - or a text link. These exceptions are detailed in the database list below

Clicking on the FindText button will bring up a menu of available services. From this menu you will be able to:
  • Link directly to the full text of the article if the library has a subscription.
  • Search the UT Libraries catalog to see if the journal or book is in the library.
  • If there is no full text available through the library, order a copy using ILLiad.
  • Get help from a librarian.

Keep in mind that there are two new browser windows that will open when using FindText. The first is the list of services; this window also contains citation information from the source database. When you select one of the FindText services, a second new window opens with these results.

Who can use FindText?

University of Tennessee faculty, students and staff, and patrons in a Knoxville campus library.

Can I use FindText from off campus?

Yes, any University of Tennessee faculty, student or staff member can use this service when authorized using NetID and password.

What should I do if there is no full text available from the FindText menu?

Full text is not always available electronically, either because the publisher doesn't make it available or because the library doesn't subscribe to it. In this case, you can check the catalog to see if the library has the item in print format. If the catalog search turns up "The record you requested is not in the database" you may request the item from Interlibrary Loan by selecting the ILLiad service from the FindText menu.

I clicked on the full text link and only got to the journal's home page or table of contents. What do I do now?

FindText will get you as close to the article as it can, depending what the publisher provides. You may have to navigate through the publisher's site to get to the article you need. Remember that the citation information is available in the FindText menu window.

I have a citation from a print source. Can FindText help me?

There is a FindText utility that will help you with a print citation. Go to http://linkserv.lib.utk.edu:9003/sfx/cgi/core/citation-linker.cgi, enter the citation information into the form, and hit 'Go'. A FindText menu for your citation will appear.
